Multilingualism

In Curwen, we support multilingual children who are new to English by providing welcoming sessions, assessing their level of English and supporting them with their home language and English Language needs, as well as building up their confidence and ensuring they feel welcome, included and happy in our school.

Most of our children are multilingual. However, only a few need regular language support and these are included in several focused lessons to improve their Social, Listening, Speaking, Reading or Writing skills. Additionally, all staff have regular training to work with children with EAL.

We liaise with parents as well, either by facilitating communication, arranging interpretation services, organising ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes, conducting home visits where we share resources and suggest the best support at home or by involving EAL parents in school activities, like in our fantastic International & Family Week!

This is only a part of all the amazing work we do in Curwen with children and parents who have English as an additional language. Please have a look below at the different support that we provide.

We are delighted at Curwen to have been awarded the EAL Silver Quality Mark.
