Summer 1

Understanding the world and Expressive Arts and Design

This term, our topic is ‘Growth’ and we have thoroughly enjoyed talking and sharing what we have learnt about living things, ourselves and decay. We followed instructions to plant some cress seeds and then watched them grow. We have used our listening and communication skills to learn about the life cycles of plants, duck, chicks and the human cycle. We have developed our writing skills and used our sounds to write about the life cycles of the ducks we had at school. Our trip this term was to West Ham Park.  We used our writing skills to write about our fun-filled session.  We looked at plants, did tree rubbings and found other living things in the park.

Communication, Language and Literacy

In Reception we have been using our literacy skills in a variety of ways to help explore and write about our knowledge of Growth. We have been working on our understanding of finger spaces in our writing, as well as beginning to use capital letters and full stops. From writing captions about life cycles to expressing our thoughts on paper we have been using our sounds to write. We have been practising our reading skills of sequencing, recalling and summarising during reading time and discussing what we know. In phonics, we have been developing and consolidating our blending skills to help us explore a range of books and even write about them. In addition, we have been to the local library to explore their range of books and get a Library book.

Maths

In reception this term, we have moved onto exploring our mathematical understanding of numbers beyond the number 10! We have been exploring our teen numbers, and using number lines to support us with this, which has also helped us to explore the concept of 1 more and 1 less of a given number. We have now started to look at two numbers which we add together to give us the total of 5, and as well as our number bonds to 10. We are now moving onto learning how to double a number, which will help us to develop our problem solving strategies and become better equipped to develop our mental strategies when we are working out our maths stories.
