This Autumn 2 our theme is ‘Ourselves.’ Children have been learning about what they look like, why they are special, who is special to them and how we all celebrate special event in our lives.

Families have sent photos of a celebration they have had with their families and friends. It has been amazing seeing children sharing these photos; talking about who they celebrate with; what they do; what special clothes they wear and what yummy food they eat. Children are beginning to develop conversation, often jumping from topic to topic. They are also beginning to remember special times in their own experience.

Families enjoyed children’s first class assembly and we all learnt together about Guru Nanak’s Birthday, Diwali and the Festival of Lights with the story of Rama and Sita. Children played around favourite stories using props and their imagination to pretend to be the characters in the story, cooking mud pies and preparing sandwiches for a birthday party.

Children have learnt about Bonfire Night and fireworks; how colourful they are but they are also very dangerous. Children manipulate and play with different media to make simple models to express their ideas and thoughts to create spectacular fireworks.

Children are developing counting-like behaviour, counting in everyday contexts like candles on a birthday cake. But if was very hard to make choices to choose your favourite cake!!

Children have been introduced to Show and Tell every Friday. This helps children to build their confidence and with some guidance they can understand simple questions about ‘who’, ‘what’ and ‘where’

This Autumn 2, children have started visiting Curwen Library and Ms Fuller the librarian. They are learning how to treat books with respect, turning the pages carefully and responding to the pictures. Children can identify ‘pictures’ and ‘writing’ now.

Children have also learnt about a special family: The Royal Family, exploring where they live identifying The King and Queen. And learning that Queen Elizabeth II was King Charles’ III mum. We have made our own crowns or tiaras. Thinking about colours, shapes and patterns.
