2020 certainly started with a bang! Year 6 spent the first week after Christmas tackling courageous activities in artic-like conditions at Fair Play House. Activities included: high ropes, caving, adventures in the woodland and the legendary 3G swing. Each and every child showed resilience and determination to overcome any challenges they encountered, whilst also building their own self confidence and developing stronger relationships with their peers.

Our topic work this term, has focussed on World War II – how it started and its effect on the local area. In History, Year 6 explored the validity of different sources and also debated such fiery issues as… ‘Was Hitler a passionate lunatic?’. In RE, they have been exploring different religious leaders and looked at the importance of good leadership. Science lessons ‘saw’ the children continue to develop their understanding of light, shadows and reflection, as well as, learning about the functions and physiology of the eye.

During literacy lessons, the children wrote poems about the South Hallsville School bombing that occurred in Canning Town in 1940. Year 6 thoroughly enjoyed their visit to Chistlehurst Caves in Kent where they learnt about the causes and effects of war, whilst also trying to understand what war was like for those many children who were evacuated from London to the countryside.

Year 6 pupils have worked very hard so far this term in maths lessons. They have been able to tackle challenging problems involving area and perimeter, linking this to their knowledge of the real world. The children have further developed their resilience and problem solving skills during topics such as algebra and ratio and proportion.
