Autumn 1
This term, our class embarked on a fascinating journey through Elizabethan England. We delved into the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, asking the thought-provoking question, "Was Elizabeth the First a good ruler?" To answer this, we created a timeline of key events, conducted thorough research, and explored the powerful role of propaganda in the Elizabethan era. We even drew connections between Elizabethan times and the Victorian period.
In our science lessons, we ventured into the human body, studying the intricate anatomy of the heart and the circulatory system. We had the unique opportunity to examine a real lamb's heart, identifying its different sections. To solidify our understanding, we created dramatic performances, acting out the fascinating journey of blood through the human body. We also applied our scientific knowledge to real-world situations by conducting geography fieldwork. We asked our own questions, such as "Which is the safest entrance in the school grounds?" and "Which area of the school is the cleanest?" and used our observations to draw conclusions.
At the beginning of the term, we took a trip to the Southbank in London to gather information for our non-chronological reports. We analysed persuasive leaflets and learned how to make our own writing more convincing. Throughout the term, we honed our reading skills, including skimming, scanning, identifying fact and opinion, sequencing, and inferring meaning. We also delved into the world of Shakespeare, exploring the themes and characters of four of his plays.
In mathematics, we focused on the properties of numbers. We explored factors, multiples, prime numbers, prime factors, and square numbers. We also strengthened our understanding of the four main operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Through group and partner work, we developed essential skills such as communication, teamwork, resilience, and reflection.
