Summer 1

In topic this term, we have covered a range of subjects. In Geography, we have been learning about mountains, volcanos and earthquakes, and we have used 4 and 6 figure grid references to describe where things are on a map.  In Design and Technology, we have been creating our costumes for Carnival; we have learned how to sew using a basic running stitch. In drama, we have been developing our teamwork skills by preparing a play about the Windrush, which we are looking forward to sharing with you as part of our International Family week celebrations. Finally, in RE, we have been thinking about tolerance when looking at how different religions use the arts to express their faith; we created our own prayer mats and stained glass windows.

In Literacy, we started by focusing on our reading skills. We read a book by Benjamin Zephaniah, called the Windrush Chid, which tells the story of a young boy and his family who travelled to England on the Windrush. We explored the different emotions that each character would have gone through and were able to empathise with them. To finish off the unit, we have been writing a newspaper article based on the experiences of those who came to England as part of the Windrush Generation. We used drama to help us to come up with ideas for our writing.

In maths, we have been focusing on Geometry, while continuing to focus on fluency within our basic skills. We have learned to read coordinates in all four quadrants, as well as finding missing coordinates in complex shapes. From there, we moved on to looking at rotation, translation and reflection. We were able to use our knowledge of coordinates to help us to describe the movement of shapes.
