Spring 1

Topic
This term, year 5 have begun learning about the Victorian Era. The children created timelines to understand more about this time period, learning about Queen Victoria’s reign, Victorian inventions and the industrial revolution. Children have been making comparisons between the lives of poor Victorian’s working in the work house, and rich Victorians who own factories.
Literacy
Year 5 used the team of hope to play around with words when doing poetry. The children enjoyed breaking the conventional rules of writing and focused exclusively on understanding features of poetry and reading with expression and fluency. All children got to listen to and read a variety of poems by poets, including those from the Victorian era. They then wrote their own poems, including metaphors, similes and hyperbole for effect. Finally, they took part in poetry performances which gave them a chance to see how poets use their bodies for delivery and effect.
Maths
The start of term provided an exciting opportunity for the children because it was no pens day. During our maths lessons, Year 5 spent the day exploring maths concept using concrete resources. Children were able to use their core skills of teamwork, problem solving and communication to find the answers of questions given.
The activities centred around division and fractions which the children are learning about this term. Making use of concrete resources have helped every child to access means of explaining maths which may have been tricky without it.
