Summer 2

Topic
This term, year 5 experienced sports day and geography day. The children were allowed to display their sportsmanship alongside their parents and get stuck in doing all sorts of competitive games. They enjoyed baseball, egg and spoon, relay and the 100-meter sprint. There were even some more unusual games in there too, like the wheelbarrow race and rolling race. For geography day, the children and their teachers took a walk to West Ham Park and completed a variety of tasks along the way. Their fieldwork explores the quality of air in Plaistow and gave was to great analysis when back at school.
Literacy
This term, in year 5 the children have been reading their class books and producing work based on what they have read. Their focus has been on understanding how the author chooses words and phrases that evoke certain emotions in their writing. Children had the chance to design their own island in 5T, imagine they were a wizard in 5CB and write a newspaper report about a magical incident, write a letter to the queen about an important issue in 5PB and design and advertise a spy gadget in 5C. The children were able to draw on their knowledge of what they read to create beautiful examples of work as well as use their art, PSHE and geography skills.
Maths
This term, year 5 have been exploring positions on a coordinate grid. They have thought about where exactly things were and wrote coordinates on the x and y axis. The children have also spent some time learning how to reflect and rotate shape. When rotating shapes, it is important to remember that things rotate around a centre point known as the centre of rotation. This point always stays the same. Children had to make use of directional language and angles, as they were rotating 90/180.2700 degrees clockwise or anti-clockwise.
