Autumn 2
This term, year 5 went on a residential trip to Cheshunt. For two days, we worked hard on Curwen’s core skills: teamwork, resilience, communication, strive for success and leadership, among others. We joined in on boating, archery and climbing. We also took part in a very fun quiz about general knowledge and previous learning that Mrs Horsington planned for us for the night there. It was a great opportunity to make new bonds and learn more about each other. We definitely had a great time!
In literacy, we have been exploring different genres this half term. 5C has been reading Kensuke’s Kingdom, 5T Alex Rider: Stormbreaker, 5L Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and finally, 5B read The Boy at the Back of the Class. Children wrote fabulous descriptive writings based on their book. They included different literary devices to engage the reader, as well as elements to build up suspense and tension.
In maths, we have been consolidating our learning on addition and subtraction from year 4. We have worked on our previous knowledge to build upon it, developing our understanding of place value and decimals. We worked on our journaling skills by putting in writing, step by step, how to solve more complex operations, as well as identifying and explaining mistakes and misconceptions.
