As part of science, year 5 took a journey to Mars. We met Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon and Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space. We maintained a space shuttle; we were the first humans to walk on Mars and we even knocked a meteorite heading to Earth. In history, we learnt about Ancient Greece. In this experience, we haggled for olives and feta at the market in the Agora, met Plato and sought advice from the Oracle at Delphi, we sailed on a ship taking barrels of olive oil to Sparta and we disguised ourselves as actors in an amphitheatre. We also entered the javelin contest in the Games at Olympia.

 In literacy, we have been learning and reading about the ancient Olympic Games. To introduce the topic, we took part in different sport events to get a sense of what the experience might have been and understand the number of skills and determination required. This led into weeks our hard work researching and understanding the Olympics that resulted in a non-chronological report where we studied the differences and similarities between ancient and modern games.

In maths, we have been learning about properties of numbers and place value. We used concrete resources to make sure we were confident with the learning and understood the reasoning behind the value of each digit in a number. This allowed us to quickly move into more complex questions about partition, ordering numbers and more.
