The main theme to our term was ‘Influences on our Planet’, with the geography focus of ‘Sustainability and Environmental Issues’. In Literacy, we investigated the impacts of the actions of humans on their environment, looking at how we are causing damage on a daily basis through our overuse of non-renewable resources. Two of our main activities included writing a speech to persuade people to take more care of their environment and embrace the ethos of ‘reduce, reuse, recycle and repair’, and a short descriptive writing piece about the day the floods came!

Continuing on this theme, we enjoyed or trip to The Crystal at Royal Victoria Dock, where we were able to gain a greater understanding of sustainable development and the impacts of human actions on the environment. We explored ways that we can reduce our ‘carbon footprint’ and protect the environment for future generations. Did you know that some scientists believe if we don’t reduce the number of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere this could lead to climate change and rising sea level?  Apparently, areas of Newham could have a sea view, if we don’t act now! We think that’s a good reason to ‘reduce, reuse, recycle and repair’!

In addition to learning about the future of our environment, we have enjoyed investigating life cycles and habitats in Science. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Soanes Centre, where we took part in a pond dipping activity. We learned lots of fascinating facts about the classification of animals and different species of pond life. Using a microscope, we examined our ‘catch’, comparing the animals with the identification charts. We were fascinated by the different species of larvae and were particularly fortunate to catch newts. The whole day really enhanced our understanding of the ‘circle of life’!

On top of all of this, we displayed amazing talent at the annual Sports Day and met amazing creatures when Zoo Lab visited school – a tarantula, gecko and corn snake to name a few! Our Victorian Museum also proved to be a huge success. Particular mention should go to the drama group who immersed themselves in the characters of some famous Victorians, like Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Charles Dickens and Queen Victoria.

The year culminated in a well-deserved fun day at West Ham Park, where we had a great time participating in games, playing on the playground and having a relaxing, enjoyable time with our friends. What a fabulous way to finish the year. No doubt Year 6 will be another year to remember!
