What we have been learning at Curwen 11/05- 15/05

Once again children and staff have been very busy at Curwen this week taking part in a range of activities.

Children in EYFS were busy making clocks using paper plates. They used their maths skills to read the o’clock time. Children enjoyed listening to Bear Poems and rhyming words and after they chose to create their own bear cave using junk modelling and different media. We have been very lucky this week to play sports with Ms Tully in the hall. We had a fantastic time using all of the equipment. Solving maths problems is hard, but children used their skills to solve them and find the correct answers.

In KS1 in literacy we have been exploring and comparing traditional stories such as Little Red Riding Hood and The Three Little Pigs. We explored features of these types of stories and drew a story map to help us sequence the events. Then we developed our descriptive writing skills, using interesting adjectives to describe characters such as the wolf. In Maths we continued learning about fractions, this week using ‘part-whole’ models to help us to find fractions of amounts. We also worked on our multiplication skills, recognising that multiplication is the same as repeated addition.

In PE we have been working hard on our throwing and catching skills. We challenged ourselves by increasing the distance or by catching with one hand only.

In PSHE this week we have been exploring emotions and kindness. Do you like our kindness buckets we created? We made these after reading ‘Have you filled a bucket today?’- a story about kindness. We are going to fill our buckets with acts of kindness towards our family and classmates.

This week, years 3 and 4 read a time travelling story! They then wrote their own time travelling stories about where they would time travel to. In maths, they have been playing lots of quick fire games such as the loop game and hot potato to practise the four operations. During forest school, the children collected their own materials to make a fire and then discussed reversible and irreversible changes when melting chocolate before making chocolate corn flake cakes. The children also learnt about where dream catchers originated from before making their own using colourful wool.

 

This week in literacy years 5 & 6 have been investigating what we can do to help save the planet. After reading the book – 101 Ways to Save the Planet – we wrote letters to our class teachers detailing what we could do in school to help save the planet. Some of our ideas were:

-Having recycling monitors

-Turning electronic equipment off – lights, computers, interactive whiteboards

-Building bug hotels and having bird tables in the playground

-Having a clothes / toy swap once a month
