On Wednesday 23rd June Curwen Primary School hosted an exciting Travel to Tokyo event where children and staff got active with Jazz Carlin, an Olympic silver medallist and Nigel Huddleston, the Minister for Sport and Tourism. Children in Reception and year 5 took part in a variety of Travel to Tokyo Ten physical activities. They had an amazing morning.

The virtual ‘Travel to Tokyo’ challenge has engaged over 1.5 million participants across the UK to get active in the build up to the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Travel to Tokyo is part of the Get Set, Team GB and Paralympic GB’s youth engagement programme, created with funding from Sport England and Spirit of 2012.

The programme has been designed to empower young people and their families to get active and make healthy lifestyle choices alongside their classmates. With this programme children are able to track and celebrate their progress online as part of their school team. Everyone’s physical activity can be logged as part of the virtual Get Set Travel to Tokyo challenge.

The Minister for Sport visited the Tapscott Learning Trust’s Curwen Primary School to see first-hand how ‘Travel to Tokyo’ is helping communities to get active, build healthy habits and have fun whilst doing so!

The morning kicked off with an assembly. Pupils had the exciting opportunity to meet the inspirational two time Olympic Silver Medallist, Jazz Carlin, who talked about her love of swimming and what motivated her along her journey. Jazz went on to answer questions from the class before everyone got stuck into some fun activities in the playground. The fun, accessible and inclusive activities had been designed to motivate and inspire individuals to get active at their own pace in a fun, low pressure environment. Schools are able to log the activities they have taken part in with the opportunity to win prizes!
