Curwen Primary School

Autumn 1

DT, Science and MMS

In Year 1 we started our topic about school grounds. To find out more we went on a walk around the school and took pictures of all the places we could see. We then talked about why these places are important and who uses them. We also talked about our favourite places in school and explained what makes them so special to us. Everyone loved the swimming pool! Did you know that some school have ponds and chicken coops?

In DT we are looking at playground equipment. To learn more about this we went to a playground near Plaistow Station and explored the different equipment. We had great fun on the swings and climbing frames! Then we made observational drawings of some important parts of playground equipment such as bolts, nets, chains, planks and springs. Do you know why these are important?

We have been very excited to start our Science topic on common materials where we are learning about materials around us and what makes them suitable for their purpose. To help us with this we went on a ‘material’ hunt around our school and labelled all materials we could find. Then we sorted some objects according to their materials and properties using groupings like ‘hard’ and ‘soft’, ‘smooth’ and ‘rough’.

In MMS we are learning how to add and take away using cups. When we add we say ‘Get ready to get some more!’ When we take away we say ‘Get ready to take away!’ Acting out with cups is very helpful especially when we have to write the Maths Story in our books. We also use decimetre stick to make open and closed shapes. This will help us later on with finding the perimeter of shapes.
