Topic

This term, year 5 have been learning about sustainability and understanding how to keep the world safe for future generations. Children understood what latitude and longitude mans and why they are important. All children were able to use grid references to locate places on a map. Children also had the opportunity to create slides about sustainability, explaining how to keep the environment clean. Children were excited to listen to a NPP experience about climate crisis.

Literacy

This term, year 5 have been reading survivor, escape from Pompeii, in the build up to their writing assessment. This has allowed children to explore what life might have been like for someone who was experiencing an earthquake. They acted out a scene from the book and used these ideas to generate vocabulary. Children also used dictionaries, thesauruses and picture prompts build a powerful word bank they can use in their writing. Finally, they created sentences with similes, metaphors and personification about earthquakes and tsunamis.

 

Maths

During our maths lessons this term, Year 5 has been learning about angles and converting between units of measure. They have understood that angles can be found everywhere. Children were keen on finding missing angles by using the information they already know about different types of angles and applying this to their questions. When learning about different units of measure, children used their prior knowledge of multiplying by 10,100 and 1000 to calculate how many grams are in a kilogram.
