Curwen Primary School

Spring 2

Literacy

In Literacy this term, we have been focusing on our love of reading. Each class has been reading a different class text (4C have been reading The Sleeping Sword, 4K have been reading The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips, 4A have been reading Treasure Island and 4N have been reading Cyborg Cat and the Rise of the Parson’s Road Gang) We have been practising our inference skills to understand the abstract concepts of the book, as well as working to improve our fluency and expression when reading and our comprehension skills. We have also celebrated World Book Day by wearing our pyjamas to school and enjoyed hot chocolate with whipped cream and marshmallows! We decorated potatoes to look like our favourite book characters and presented them to our classmates to inspire them to read something new.

Maths

In Maths, we started the term by exploring the properties of 2D shapes and learning how to calculate the area and perimeter. We had the opportunity to use concrete resources to help develop our understanding further. We then looked at different types of angles and were able to use real life objects to compare acute, right angles, obtuse and reflex angles. We have also been learning how to tell the time on both analogue and digital clocks. We have been consolidating our skills by telling the time and using the clocks around our school throughout the school day.

Topic

In our Topic lessons this term, we have been exploring rivers.  We have been investigating the different parts of a river and understanding the water cycle’s importance to our environment.  Alongside this work, we also enjoyed a Geography field trip to Chelsea and Battersea park.  We compared the human and physical features of Plaistow with those we found in another part of London.  The children really enjoyed their day out, and conducted some thorough research, which allowed them to make conclusions about the similarities and differences of the two areas.
