Curwen Primary School

Spring 2

Maths

In Maths this term we have been learning 3D shapes, time and interpreting data. To learn about properties of 3D shapes, we made models of common 3D shapes with cocktail sticks and then we counted their faces, edges and vertices. We also started reading and recording analogue and digital time to the nearest 5 minutes. We used clocks to show the analogue time by looking carefully at the minute and the hour hands and then matched analogue to digital time

Literacy

This term, each class has started to read a new class book. By the end of the summer term, each class will have read each of the following books: Fantastic Mr Fox as well as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl, The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett and Rumaysa by Radiya Hafiza. We have continued working on our fluency and expression when reading, and we are getting lots of practise at using evidence from the text to support inference and to understand authorial intent.

Science

In Science this term Year 3 have been learning about rocks and soils. We explored different types of rocks, described them using scientific vocabulary and then sorted them according to their properties. We also carried out an experiment to test the hardness of rocks and discovered that igneous rocks like granite are very hard and sedimentary rocks like chalk are very soft. We also learned about how fossils are formed over millions of years and how they preserve organisms from the past.
