Curwen Primary School

Spring 2

During the Spring term, we explored the ancient Egyptians as our Topic. We found we could arrange historical events chronologically by using BC and AD, and that the Egyptians existed many thousands of years ago. We learnt all about the impressive structures they built, such as the pyramids - and that they arranged their society in a similar shape as well, with their supreme ruler, the pharaoh, at the very top. The Egyptians were one of the first civilizations to make paper (called papyrus) and we wrote each other secret messages using hieroglyphics. Finally, we sang our way through the mummification process and some of us even tried our hand mummifying a piece of fruit!

Year 3 pupils have covered a variety of areas in maths since returning to school.  We have been interpreting data in charts and graphs, recapped area and perimeter, and solved problems involving time. We also explored 2D and 3D shapes, trying to identify shapes, based on the clues given by our partners.

During literacy lessons, each class has started to read a new class book. By the end of the summer term, each class will have read each of the following books: Fantastic Mr Fox by Roald Dahl; Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl; Buried Alive by Jacqueline Wilson and The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. We have begun by focusing on reading with fluency and expression, whilst also using evidence from the text to support inference and to understand authorial intent.

Website Update – Home Learning Literacy/Numeracy

During home learning, we worked very hard for literacy and maths, both on zoom and during our independent google classroom assignments. In maths, we learnt about money. We learnt about the different coins and notes we use in the UK and made total amounts using a variety of coins. We even thought about the change we would receive if we were paying for items in real life at the shops! One of our main topics in literacy was poetry. For poetry we got to write our own riddle poems where the reader had to guess what animal we were describing. We made sure to include lots of exciting adjectives and even some similes! Can you guess what animal the poem below is describing?

After we came back to school from lockdown, we started learning about forces in our Science lessons. We looked at pushes and pulls and explored what happens to an object when a force is applied. We also learned about friction and carried out some experiments to investigate the strength of different magnets.

In Topic we started learning about changes in Britain from the Stone Age to the Iron Age. We ordered some significant events on a timeline and talked about how these events have happened over a long period of time.

In PSHE we started learning about legal and illegal substances and how they can affect our bodies. We talked about what a habit is and explained that some substances can be helpful, like medication, or harmful like tobacco.
